No ice at Dawson
« on: November 13, 2017, 11:03:38 pm »
A correspondent across the border in Dawson YT reports that the Yukon is not freezing even after weeks of cold weather. An ice jam upriver is stopping all the new ice coming downriver. He says this happened last winter. This makes a problem for Dawsonians normally living across the river from town (West Dawson). During breakup and freezeup they stay with friends in town while river crossing is impossible because of no ice road across the river or no ferry. People are getting tired of waiting. One lady was considering a hovercraft. If this persists all winter it may cause the Yukon Quest to be rerouted.

Climate change strikes again.

Last winter in Dawson there wasn't an "official" ice bridge, but there was an ice bridge none the less, people where crossing most of the winter, and early november is pretty rare to have the bridge in anyway. It usually take at least about a month before the ice is tick enough to cross with vehicles. I have lots of friends in Dawson, and most in West Dawson. There is a chopper service during freeze up and same in the spring for brake up, but it isn't cheep!

Most will bulk up on provision until the ferry ends its season and just wait the for the bridge to form to go back to town. People that work in town usually rent a place or stay with friends...

Kids do home schooling or are in town with there parents or friends.
