: Algonquin PP Ontario Family Day Weekend 2013
: jimmay January 05, 2013, 10:32:09 AM
Ontario family day is Monday February 18, 2013 and noise is already being made to have a repeat of the great weekend we had last year at the Mew Lake Campground in Algonquin Provincial Park.

I have created this post to organize ourselves and keep any relevant information together.  Please move all discussion for this meetup here.

I am tentatively planning to attend with T, my kids and dog, weather permitting and baring any unforeseen obligations.

Who else is attending?

I plan on being there. I picked out a new site on the airfield in October when canoeal and I were there.

My friends and I are also planning to stay at Mew that weekend

I'm going to be up there from Tuesday the 12th until the Saturday the 16th.  I'll be camping in the airfield.  Is anyone going to be up before the weekend?  I haven't been to one of the family day events in the park yet.  I'm assuming it is farily busy on the weekend?  Hopefully it's quiet during the week before :)
: Re: Algonquin PP Ontario Family Day Weekend 2013
: scoutergriz January 27, 2013, 03:51:05 PM
We plan on arriving sometime after noon on friday, and leaving Sunday or Monday. And yes it gets a little busy, but most are respectful and quiet. Don't be suprised if you have people asking about your setup, last year I had a couple of dozen want to see both mine and my buddy's rigs.
If anyone is wanting to drop by, we'll probably have a large 10-man bell tent (WWII vintage) and a small 2-man blue nylon and white canvas hybrid A-frame :)

Were you right in the Mew Lake Campground last year?  Was it quiet during the week and busy on the weekend?  Ill be in the airfield if you want to slide by for a brew!  Where are you guys planning on staying?
: Re: Algonquin PP Ontario Family Day Weekend 2013
: scoutergriz January 27, 2013, 05:01:06 PM
Yup; We were right beside the cold-camping display, hence the interest in our hot tents.
It was actually surprisingly quiet the whole weekend, the crowds only showed up saturday morning from about 8am on, and most headed out to the bird hike and museum displays right away, only to return in late afternoon for the BBQ and wolf howl (which is in the old airfield by the way).
A few stuck around for skating and hot chocolate in the Mew Lake comfort station parking lot, but there was very little yelling or carring on all day.
Friday and Sunday were very quiet, with only the "hardcore" and a few trailers sticking around.
We'll be in the hydro sites near the comfort station so we can have our fancy 'lectric lights 8)
I've messed up my back, so no hauling (and little snowshoeing) for me this year  :(

We'll be in the campground as well. We're going to make the trek down the track and trail to visit everyone. Scootergriz what day are you arriving?

I know this is totally selfish but I wish they didn't have these winter camping things lol....The less people that know how fun it is the better!  Even over the past 10 years or so I have noticed a big difference in the amount of people in Algonquin in the winter.  I remember being the only person in the Mew Lake campground several times.  Now there's pretty much always people there, especially on the weekends.  It's still a far cry from summer, but I LOVE the solitude part of winter camping.  I don't want to see it get to the point that you need to reserve a site in the winter...but again that's just me being selfish about it :)

One thing I do notice though is that those who do winter camping are not your typical weekend-warriors.  They have a high level of respect for the park and the quietness....

Do they set up displays along the Track and Tower trail?
: Re: Algonquin PP Ontario Family Day Weekend 2013
: ravinerat January 27, 2013, 05:47:48 PM
No such thing as solitude along the Hwy 60 corridor. There are vehicles parked at every trail head.Algonquin is a busy place in the winter. Why not try Rain Lake entrance or one of the other options for getting into the Park. We used to do a week up in the Rain Lake area. WE never used to see anyone. A few years after we started to see other groups heading in.

Lots of Ontario to explore. I'm all over the place and never see anyone when you get back a few lakes. The odd time a trapper or hunter.

Is the road plowed into Rain Lake in the winter?  I never really thougth about that. Honestly I haven't had an issue along Hwy 60 finding solitude.  I find I just have to be a bit more selective now as to when I go.  Mid-week is usually quiet.  Mew Lake does start to get a few people so now I have moved to camping in the airfield, or back in the radio or dog free area.  I hosted a photography workshop there last fall and mistakingly picked teh Thanksgiving weekend to do it.  Wow that was INSANE!  All of the parking lots were jammed and there were literally busloads parked for a km on the highway shoulders on each side of each trail....won't do that again!
: Re: Algonquin PP Ontario Family Day Weekend 2013
: ravinerat January 27, 2013, 06:29:39 PM
You  have to see if they are logging in the area. If so they plow the road in. Most times we go they haven't so we have had to ski in just to get to the main campground.  This year the snow has been low and I know some who have driven right in. There are also some lodges at other access points that sell permits for the park. You could access from there and have secure parking as well. You'd never see a soul. Get yourself a Backroads Map book. Check out some of the more remote lakes with maybe a marina on them. Park at the marina and one or two portage and your by yourself. There are tons of solutions to seclusion.

I'm surprised at not seeing much mention of camping off the Sunday Lake dogsled trail. I'd choose this for it's easy access and remoteness (but not *too* remote unless one wanted that). Am also looking at topos of the Park for other spots to possibly recon in the fall for other potential sites.

But back on topic, not sure if my wife and I will be heading up to APP or Temagami (Smoothwater) for the family day long weekend. Would like to meet everyone and play 'spot the Wintertrekking patches' ;)
: Re: Algonquin PP Ontario Family Day Weekend 2013
: hotelfive January 27, 2013, 07:47:14 PM
Are there any decent spots to set up off the Sunday lake trail?  How far along do you have to go before you find a decent spot?  I like to be fairly close to the parking spot so I can go for hikes etc during the day...
: Re: Algonquin PP Ontario Family Day Weekend 2013
: theDuck January 27, 2013, 07:58:53 PM
I plan on being there the Friday and out on Sunday. I'll be at the airfield. Last year on family day it was fairly quiet out on the airfield.
: Re: Algonquin PP Ontario Family Day Weekend 2013
: buddhabelly January 27, 2013, 08:33:07 PM
I've never actually had the chance to camp off Sunday Lake trail but it's pretty choice I think and hope to camp there next year. The sleds (and the grooming) help keep the trail nice for easy pulling but you have to make sure you step off when they come up the trail behind you. I figure an hour and you'd probably find a good spot.

Depending on where you camp, the trail bisects the Big Pine hiking trail so there's your hiking there and access to camping areas ;)  I'd just snowshoe the loops vs hike if I was camping there and I believe a member here posted a detailed TR about his stay in the area. Just a note, I'm pretty sure one is not allowed to hike on the dogsled trail as postholes would be bad for a team running full out. It's either dogs or snowshoes.

This area also gives you the opportunity to bump into Craig MacDonald if he's out grooming the trails. HE is someone who has an immense wealth of knowledge and is always happy to talk traditional winter travel. I've had the pleasure to come across him on the trails over the years and learn something every time I meet him.

I've only started to use the park again. Since the rest of Ont is free and the vast acreage there is just tons of places to go. I had read the report on the dog sled trail. Much of the Hwy 60 corridor has the same topography. We used to do the Upland Hiking trial but I was much younger. It would kill me now. Flat is good.

I'm not sure where we will set up, but I do know it will not be at the campground.  With the new gear I suspect we will try to head farther down the trail.  I think we are planning to leave around noon Friday so should be there about 3:30, weather permitting.  Where on the airfield are you guys setting up?

As much as I would love to set up in the airfield (for better view and to save a couple bucks), This being the first time out with our gear I will be in the campground (This is out trial run), most likely in the Radio free area, But hopefully next year when I will be more prepared with set up/gear/etc we will move out to the air field or elsewhere in the backcountry. However we will be making a trek out to say hi for sure and to check it out!  Can't wait to meet everyone.

Do we use some sort of Internationally recognized hand gesture or a noise. Like the Water Buffaloes?

Easy enough to find any of us- as I said in another post , just look for the people in wool and canvas, Not the "Citiot" clean $500 parkas :o ;)
I'm hoping to arrive early in the afternoon Friday and plan on leaving Monady AM

I've got most of my stuff packed. I work the next 3 days then off to APP to camp with my imaginary friends from the internet ;D. I'll be down the airfield trail and off to the east of the trail about 50 yards.

I am fairly certain I will not be able to make it this year and I am incredibly disappointed.  I have had a real doosey of a flu since Saturday which now seems to have settled into my lungs. However, I no longer have a fever so the doc thinks I am on the mend, but I am reluctant to push my luck this weekend. Have fun guys and please take lots of pictures for the trip report.

Sad to hear jimmay. Look after yourself. I missed the New Years campout at Mew Lake due to a cold and I am glad I didn't push it and go.  It would have been a struggle to do it.  Say hi to T and we may see you later in the season.

We should start putting the Wintertrekking patches on the front doors of our tents like this.
A great way to invite fellow trekkers in for a mug-up and wee dram.

I think the canvas tent with a stove pipe sticking out is a dead giveaway as to who the winter trekkers are.  They may not be members of this site, but these people would be in the know when it come to winter trekking/camping.

Cheers

As mentioned we're going to the Wilderness Canoe Symposium or I'd join y'all.

If anyone shows up without, their patch, be sure to get their toboggan lic. number and forward it to me so I can put them on report.

Won't likely be out until the following week.

Cheers,

I am not sure if or when exactly we'll or I'll be up.  I have been trying to leave since 4am this morning with out much success. Tomorrow doesn't stack up to be too promising either. Maybe Saturday or Sunday hopefully. I'll stay up for a few days next week. It seems (even as I write this 2 more projects have arrived to start as usual yesterday) that the getting away is the problem and not the staying away.  On that note, do we have any idea how many members from the forum will be up over the weekend?

Have fun and be safe everyone.  The forecast for the west side of Algonquin is calling for 10cm of snow through Friday morning.  The rest of the weekend looks good and will have at least 1 night in the -20s.

Great stuff OF. Sorry didn't get time to look it up. There ae many activities around the park. At the visitor center they have put a road kill Moose out in the marsh area. The center has a large viewing window looking out over acreas of the park. The wolf pack will find the Moose and start their feeding. This will occur at different times through out the day as the wolves return to eat. So far only one lone Wolf has found the moose but by the weekend there will probably be a pack around it by then.

I'll be on site 14 for the weekend.
