: Winnipeg Area 2015 Group Trip
: acurrier November 06, 2014, 09:45:56 PM
Hello Folks,

By some freak chance I managed to get almost two weeks off at the start of January. I am waiting to hear back from a friend before setting dates, but I figured I would let people know that I am planning on taking a 3 day trip during the first two weeks of January. I will update the original post once I've figured out the dates, hopefully in the next week or so.

In the meantime, for anyone interested in attending, I am open to suggestions on where to go this year.

Hopefully we can get a big group together this year!

EDIT: It looks like we will be tentatively aiming for January 2-4

Great idea, but I am out between the holidays already.  May not be able to make those dates work.

I'd like to get out and meet the other locals someday.

yes, always interested!

I think we are planning on heading to Riding Mtn between Christmas and New Year unless the lakes freeze early again.

I could be persuaded to head up north if there was a way of car pooling, otherwise I would suggest we look at heading across Brereton Lake to Mud Turtle and War Eagle. The parking is good as well as not being too far from Winnipeg.

I would love to do a linear trip this winter if I can find a suitable route.

Both are good options. I enjoyed Riding Mountain last year, and of course the Whiteshell is always gorgeous. A 'traveling trip' could work, although I would have to check with the boss and see if I could do more than three days to really make the trip worth it...not sure how long she wants to be home alone with our gremlin.

Dates added, looks like we'll be aiming for Jan 2-4. Do we want to do the Whiteshell again this year? Last year BV and I went to Riding Mountain, which was nice, but we weren't able to get onto a lake or cut firewood...seems a little less regulated in the Whiteshell.

I may need to hitch a lift for this trip as my wife has a winter camp with the scouts from her section that weekend and my work truck needs some tlc but ill keep you all posted cheers Rolly

Happy to go wherever suits. I have been meaning to contact GearFreak to see where he is headed between Christmas and New Year, hoping we can tag along.

We went into Whirlpool Lake a week ago. It was a nice site with the added benefit of a large group cooking hut with two big woodstoves.

I also spoke to the folk at the park and we would likely be able to get into Lake Audy as an option. I agree that it is more regulated but it really is a beautiful area.

Not sure yet whether the missus is coming along. If not I can probably give you a ride to wherever we end up.

If you're considering Riding Mtn I would suggest Bead Lakes chain of lakes. Easy access with parking on #10 highway and a snowshoe trail in. There's no problem with cutting dead wood for firewood. Just can't use live spruce branches for flooring.

Glad to hear the truck is fixed. I wouldn't mind going back to Riding Mountains, but aren't the Bead Lakes the ones right close to the highway? I don't want to be listening to trucks from my tent.
: Re: Winnipeg Area 2015 Group Trip
: Bothwell Voyageur December 10, 2014, 01:36:13 PM
No trucks on #10!

Let's wait and see what the next few days of weather brings. We'll find somewhere great whatever happens.

Bead Lakes are 1300 metres from the highway as the crow flies. I've never heard traffic when I've been there. We sometimes go south from 4th Bead Lake following the creek out. Lots of standing dead wood in the swampy area there.

Nothing in the forecast for the next week, though it is getting colder.

5 deg in Riding Mtn!

Maybe I'll put some wheels on my toboggan!

Took the dogs for a walk in mars on sunday there's 6-8 inches of snow in the bush made for a long walk without snowshoes lol , I wish you all a merry christmas if we don't chat sooner cheers Grizz

I don't like leaving things this long either, but I think we're going to have to wait and see what the weather conditions are in a week or two. Definitely either Whiteshell or Riding Mountain.

I've got to say I'm very disappointed with the amount of snow we've had so far this year. We would have to get some massive storms to even come close to the quantity we got last year.
: Re: Winnipeg Area 2015 Group Trip
: GearFreak December 16, 2014, 11:57:07 AM
East is acceptable I hear,  I am waiting for another report to come in but eastern whiteshell has lots of ice with more snow than the valley.  Out Minaki way I hear is even better.

: Bothwell Voyageur December 16, 2014, 04:08:20 PM
I hope there is more than we have here! Working north of Ste Anne today with contractors digging a big hole. We couldn't get many of them to quote as they were too worried about the weather- too much snow etc. but the guys who did are cruising along, no snow, not too much frost.

I heard reports that many of the lakes were in really poor condition after the weekend, lots of slush. Hopefully that will all re-freeze if we we don't get more snow too soon.

It doesn't take too many bare patches on a portage to make it a real downer unless you pack really lightly. Man handling a fully loaded toboggan over rocks is an easy way to get injured. Trail reports from folk who haven't traveled this way are often misleading but I would be interested to hear what you find out.

Routes that stay on the lakes and swamps may be the best bet. There are a couple of possible options that wouldn't involve too much travel time. Alternatively a drive in site in Riding Mtn would allow us to base camp and explore from there.

could the werner lake area or nopeiming be a option further north and east just a thought, riding mtn while nice still requires a permit that I dont have and not sure if it's worth it for one trip lol funds are very limited these days sucks. also white mouth river system by the discovery center down by the scout cabin is a nice area also if one wants a more relaxing drive in base camp area.
: Re: Winnipeg Area 2015 Group Trip
: GearFreak December 17, 2014, 02:05:21 PM
Hey Griz & Crew,

Davidson-Petch-Reynar would be solid lake travel, Petch to Reynar portage is a pretty steep hill if I remember but its short, but I guess you could slip along the road.  ;)

Do you go as far as Bain Lake? bit of rough portage but once in their is some nice lake chains.
: Re: Winnipeg Area 2015 Group Trip
: Bothwell Voyageur December 17, 2014, 02:24:54 PM
Davidson would be good access Though the gravel road would certainly not have enough snow. The portage into Bain from Reynar was completely choked last time we were there but this year would be better, especially if we used the ones at the very far end of Reynar which are much easier. Unfortunately that's probably too much of a drive for ACURRIER- he'll be coming from up north. I had also thought about the Rabbit River up to Cole Lake which would be a very straightforward run.

We could head into Cabin Lake from White Lake. There is a stream/swamp joining the two, or if the ice is good on Betula try to get into Fisher Lake via the Whiteshell River. Never been there but the photos look nice!
: Re: Winnipeg Area 2015 Group Trip
: acurrier December 17, 2014, 02:50:41 PM
BV, how much further would that be than the western edge of the Whiteshell? It is a 3-4 hour drive for me already, so another 30 minutes or so wouldn't be the end of the world.
: Re: Winnipeg Area 2015 Group Trip
: Bothwell Voyageur December 17, 2014, 06:19:16 PM
According to Google Earth-

from Beausejour on Hwy 44 (which would probably be your best route, coming across on the 67 to Selkirk) Nopiming would be 1h 45mins, Brereton Lake would be 1h 16mins so your estimate of 30mins is right on the money. Perhaps others can comment on how accurate those times are. From where the road crosses the Bird River it is gravel and can vary widely in condition.

Ok, My trip is now delayed to end of January - poor conditions and that nasty thing called work for some.

I hear Riding Mountain has 8 to 10"

Send me the details or BV has my email and add me to the list.

still waiting for a status update from Nopiming!

We are headed to Riding Mtn on Boxing Day for a couple of nights. We have been told the road into Lake Audy is snow covered but driveable. We shall see! Hoping to get some shots of the Bison in winter.

If we get no more snow I think we should try one of the larger lakes in Nopiming, maybe Black Lake or Euclid Lake or I wonder what the ice would be like to head down Big Whiteshell into Little Whiteshell? I think the river is pretty slow flowing along that section.

Have a great Christmas- wish for snow!

Okay folks, here is the plan:

We'll meet at the Co-Op Gas Bar in Lac Du Bonnet (https://www.google.ca/maps/place/Co-op,+Lac+du+Bonnet+Gas+Bar/@50.251252,-96.067363,17z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m2!3m1!1s0x529534f4c3acd78b:0x699c4ffe8c952057) at 10:00am on January 2nd 2015. Once everyone is there we will drive as a group up to Nopiming Provincial Park. Once we are at the park I will leave it up to those more familiar with the area to pick a good lake, I've never been there before.

At the moment it looks like my usual traveling companion won't be able to make it for this one, so I will probably have extra vehicle/tent room if someone is in need.

Just so we have a rough idea of who will be attending, please reply here so we know to wait for you in Lac Du Bonnet...don't want to leave anyone behind. With that said, everyone is welcome! If you want to drive up from the US or over from Ontario, let us know!

That works for me.

Looks like GA and I will be travelling in one vehicle.

I'm trying to find a way of describing where the Rabbit River is! Head north in the park on the 314-DON'T take the Bird Lake Rd. The road heads in a big loop to the east, comes back again and goes in another loop past the end of Shoe Lake to the west. When it comes back again the road crosses the Rabbit River and there is a parking lot on the east side of the road. There are two lakes near the road and the river heads east from the south lake for several KM through another lake to eventually reach Cole Lake. We can head this way or take the north route through the lakes to explore that area.

You can download a park map from http://www.gov.mb.ca/conservation/parks/pdf/park_maps/nopiming/nopiming_map.pdf (http://www.gov.mb.ca/conservation/parks/pdf/park_maps/nopiming/nopiming_map.pdf) or there is an "interactive" map at (http://www.gov.mb.ca/conservation/nopiming/gMap/index.html) which shows the proscribed campsites that hopefully we can ignore.

Looking forward to it!

Hello All,

Sorry for being late to join in here, but if it can work I would love to head up to Nopiming with your group this weekend.

Chris R., Bothwell Voyageur, is my best reference (good or bad!!).

I prefer to leave the car with my Family here, so I am really hoping for a ride with one of you.

Certainly I am expecting to pay gas, and my share of all other expenses.

My hot tent has lots of space (8.5' x 8.5') to share with one other intrepid soul, or I'm happy to bunk with someone who has space, and doesn't mind me cutting & splitting their wood.

Please send a PM, if you can.

We have a family event today, but I will respond before too late this evening.

On Friday morning I can meet you where you suggest. I'll be on time.

Thanks a lot for considering this.

Sincerely,
Dean

I should have added that I am more than happy to load up my toboggan with your gear if you're sharing your tent! I'll have lots of space on my sled if my tent & stove are not coming.

The gear is drying and the Snowtrekker is hung with care,
not a creature was stirring, but still a great way to start the new year.

Thanks guys for organizing the Jan 2015 walk in the woods.

You are exactly right - great way to start a New Year.

and that cot weighs 17lbs! Your guess was closer.

: Bothwell Voyageur January 07, 2015, 10:11:53 AM
That was a great trip even if we had to take a second attempt at a location. Sorry the Rabbit never worked out, I can't believe how thin that ice was.

Hearing the weight of that cot makes me feel a little better!

Maybe you could buy a carbon fibre tripod instead of your metal one to compensate for the additional weight!

I would be in for Riding Mountain depending on dates.
Might try and get there the weekend of 17&18 of this month.

SWMBO has suggested the Louis Riel weekend for Riding Mtn in Feb but another time round then would work, either a established campsite like Whirlpool or Audy or haul into a backcountry site. There should be enough snow by then.
