Hi

BV and I have been discussing something epic-like in January.   We were going to discuss in riding mountain next weekend. He was indicating more in Ontario.

I have to work over the holidays so that is out as is second week in Feb (going way up north to play)

I would be interested in exploring that area near Whitemouth Lake at some point. Maybe later in the winter though. There is still a lot of water back in the swamps and it is going to take a good while to freeze hard enough for safe travel. Maybe we could access the area by some of the forest roads north east of Marchand?

I have been looking at a whole variety of different places and dreaming of having the time to explore but the area east of Kenora looks to have potential for a trek as opposed to a base camp trip. either Dogtooth Kilvert area or the ELA. Maybe we can even persuade some of the 'Mericans to cross the border to join us?

I'd also like to head up to Wallace Lake and head through to Siderock and then up to Obukowin if I had a week to spare...

We'll likely be headed to Riding Mtn again at Christmas.

I'll put some maps in the pack for this weekend and we can discuss it whilst we drink GFs whisky. :) Looks like we will have some snow for our first trip.

Made super shelters with the scouts this past weekend and man did they have fun, some leaders were scptical until we lit up the long log fire. I cooked the shirt right off one leader and the scouts had a warm cozy night, at some point I would like to bring my scouts out for a day hike to a winter camp site and have you fellas do a kinda presentation on winter camping . So if anyones in please let me know so I can arange the hike on a weekend that you guys are ok with lol cheers Grizz.

No maps meant no discussion.  But here was what we BV & I spoke about.

Key points:
one of those Epic point to point type trips - tear down and move each day. (yeah the cot will have to stay home!  :()
ELA area or similar NW Ont route.
Prefer to have a lodge to lodge or shuttle drop off to lodge type trip so can arrange for vehicles to be plugged in while gone.
Weekend around Jan 22 works best for me.

Who's in?

brain flash - Is White otter Castle too far? always wanted to go see Jimmy's place.

Maybe not too epic!

It looks like the lodges all shut down for the winter but I can keep digging. It may mean a day out there to scout for options. There may be a couple that cater for snowmobilers. Reddens stays open I believe, but that is a way from where we want to be. Plug ins may be even more complicated but worth having if we can get it. Would anyone be willing to head out for a day trip to scout locations? I could try Scott Green at Green Adventures. He may be able to help with a shuttle but we would have to pay of course. Rushing River PP ploughs its parking lot for the skiers but they only plan for day parking. I could try them and we could plan a there and back out to White Lake.

I think White Otter is a bit far for a long weekend!

Anyway, if it warms up any more there won't be any ice!

Due to a variety of developments it looks like we are now

a) looking at the weekend of Jan 16th-17th, either tripping from Thursday 14th to Sunday17th or Friday 15th to Monday 18th, whichever works best.

b) heading out from Davidson Lake in Nopiming via the canoe route loop to the north and return or taking a new route that Undersky has explored and mapped that runs through lakes and swamp to the south before returning to Davidson.

There should be the option of leaving a vehicle with Nopiming Lodge as back up should it turn cold and we can't get the others started.

GearFreak and I plan on making this a trek. If there are folk who would like to come along but would rather basecamp perhaps there would be an option of splitting the group into two after the first night then rejoining for the last night of camping.

Please indicate if you're interested, which days would suit and if you would like to trek or base camp.

Thanks

I'm most likely in for the base camp idea....you guys can haul your crap around in the bush while I sit by the fire and read my book till you come back...I'll have coffee on and maybe i won't have drunk all of the wiskey. I'll get back to you on the dates.

I think we can make that work - I ran one intro session last year and have another this spring as well.  if we looked at Ritchie lake or Hemingway then you can daytrip from Alloway.

I just need your teaching points or badge objectives and can go from there - shoot me an email.

Inquiring minds want to know what are we doing and confirm the dates.

And yes, the anorak is done and I hope to get the mocs done as well.

I would like to get out for three nights if others are up for it though appreciate that work and family commitments may not make it possible.

Let me know what works for you folks.
