Biggest snowfall in Red Lake this year! It is still coming and looks as though it will drop another 10cm through the night.

Try this...

www.mac.com

Two years no virus protection, no spyware protection and NO PROBLEMS

Norton and McAfee in my opinion are dangerous. You think you are protected but they are not all that effective as you have just found out.

Another thing you could try is keeping your QB data file on a flash drive. It will always be protected when it is not attached to the PC

On my list of must get, but don't have one yet.

The reason I want one is for the versatility of one single item in a survival situation. Saw, knife, pliers, awl, screwdriver etc.

My feeling is you should have one on you ALL the time. I have not put this into practice but it makes allot of sense and when I decide on which one I will be sure to get a belt pouch for it.

I heard the fur prices are down this year. Many trappers up here are struggling.

It may be a cyclical thing. Is there a market for off cuts from furriers? Can off cuts even be used?

Funny you mention that. It has been tough to get out lately but today I found a great drive up site. A great jumping off point for a trek. No trails so I could see break trail one day, travel the next sort of trip.

Harlan, if you are interested in checking it out tomorrow give me a call. Looks like the mini paddle is out because the open water on the Chukuni has filled in again. The -20 temperatures at night is looking after that. Give it a few more weeks and we can try again.

Snowshoeing Discussion / Re: lampwick

Today I had finally had a chance to test out the new binding in some real conditions.

Snow was untouched and therefore DEEP. I broke trail while the kids and the dogs and the significant other followed in my hard work.

This is what I found....

They need to be tight. If you think it is going to be tight enough, make it tighter. Even though the temperature was -10C the lampwick still got wet and stretched as it did so. When they are sloppy they are ineffective.

Adjusting them was very simple and effective.

Once you have practiced the slip in and out routine a couple of times it is very easy.

Overall I think I am going to prefer them over the leather bindings in the long run.

I will need to get some more lampwick though because on Thursday I scored 2 pairs of Faber Huron snowshoes and 1 pair of Avery and Sons Ojibwe snowshoes. Price was right. $0

Asking who comes or doesn't come to Deep Freeze is in bad taste. if you want to know who is there come yourself, Your more then welcome.
Stay safe
OAF

Sorry, I am not familiar with deep freeze etiquette. Just wondering how he was doing and I know tis is something he usually attended.

Winter Camping Clothing / Why white cotton for Anoraks?
« on: March 01, 2009, 09:43:50 pm »
Today I was out watching the Sno-X races in town and was amongst some very bundled up people who were dismayed at my attire.

I wore a pair blue jeans, long underwear of course, a fleece undershirt and a fleece black hoody. Good mittens and a trappers hat. I think the temperature was -20 and the sun was intense. I noticed how warming the sun was on the black fabric and was quite comfortable until the wind picked up a bit and started blowing through the sweater.

Then it occurred to me that we are focused on making white tents, white anoraks and so on. What would be the drawbacks of black ones?

Any sign of Mr Munn? I wonder about him sometimes. How he is doing and weather he would ever make a return the world on the forums.

Are bipods legal? I recall something from for HEP or Firearm Safety about using a stand being illegal.

Nice report. Did you fear getting run down by a snow machine while traveling on the lake in the dark?
