Made super shelters with the scouts this past weekend and man did they have fun, some leaders were scptical until we lit up the long log fire. I cooked the shirt right off one leader and the scouts had a warm cozy night, at some point I would like to bring my scouts out for a day hike to a winter camp site and have you fellas do a kinda presentation on winter camping . So if anyones in please let me know so I can arange the hike on a weekend that you guys are ok with lol cheers Grizz.

General Winter Camping Discussion / Re: Asthma issue

I have Athsma also and I find that I can function better in the cold than in the hot humid months, but the triggers are different for everyone I still bring my inhaler with me on trips. Do you use the steryoid one as well or just the rescue I have both and the only time I use the steryoid is when its hot and humid or when I get a bad cold or cough. cheers Grizz

General Winter Camping Discussion / Re: Winter Camping With Children
« on: February 20, 2015, 10:11:31 am »
Plan the trip well take things in stride be vigilant and things will come together, Last weekend my daughter she turned 11 we went with scouts canada on their Alloway Arctic Challange trip which is reserved for 14 and up I was one of the Instructors for the winter camping course we did the month prior and the trip was part of the practical portion. Well My 11 year old daughter blew away some of the ventures and rovers and even some adults that trip , hows that saying go "not the first time at the rodeo" .

I was very proud of her for hauling all her own gear on the 2.75 km trek across big whiteshell lake. especially when on the way back some were asking for rides from the snowmobiles we brought for hauling the heavy crap.

so dont worry excessively kids are quite resilient and tough when you give them the chance. have a good trip be safe have fun.

Winter Camping Clothing / Re: Mukluk insoles/reflectics
« on: January 13, 2015, 09:29:15 am »
I have tried puting the felt on the inside but with the contour insole and the felt the liner gets too tight , what I may do if this works well is take a thinner wool felt and spray glue it to a single layer of reflectix to combat that condensation issue if it becomes a problem. i love experiments lol cheers Grizz

Winter Camping Clothing / Mukluk insoles/reflectics
« on: January 12, 2015, 09:48:40 am »
Hi folks I have a small experiment going the wool felt insoles in my Steager Mukluks always tend to migrate sideways under the liner, creating a cold spot and tough to walk lol. So last night I got to thinking that I could use Reflectics insulation and some gorilla tape to fab some double thick insoles, well after a bit of cut and tape I seem to have air ride suspension lol and do not feel any cold, I tested them bare foot standing on a concrete pad in -35c with NO cold transfer from the ground. Good results thus far cheers Grizz.

I have been using a 10x12 canvas tarp in spring and fall and been very happy very similar to the adirondak , with the fire is very warm and lots of sleeping and work space . cheers Grizz

could the werner lake area or nopeiming be a option further north and east just a thought, riding mtn while nice still requires a permit that I dont have and not sure if it's worth it for one trip lol funds are very limited these days sucks. also white mouth river system by the discovery center down by the scout cabin is a nice area also if one wants a more relaxing drive in base camp area.
