General Winter Camping Discussion / Selecting a site
« on: September 28, 2008, 05:32:54 pm »
How do you select a site?

Besides the obvious things like level site and close to water what are some of the other qualities you look for in a site. I know we aren't supposed to select a summer site but isn't everything else to filled in to be practical?

Is there anything I can be doing at this time of year to prepare a site?

Ontario & Quebec / Algonquin has melted

Lakes are breaking up and there are large new lakes of run off in the trees.

Lake of two rivers looks as if it is about to break up. There is no ice near shore. Tea Lake in the harbour by Smoke Creek is open water. Looks like it would be impossible to get around right now.

I Just got this one from S Claus, I will let you know what it is like!

Ontario & Quebec / Simcoe County

Lots of snow here. LAkes are frozen but I don't suspect they are thick enough yet for travel. The snowmobile clubs are warning about thin ice on Simcoe. I bet some of the smaller lakes would be okay now as we have had a few nights of -20 now.

Sadly I'll bet the heavy snow has insulated the lake ice and the freezing may be not as advanced as i originally suspected.
