General Winter Camping Discussion / Re: Where in Algonquin to go?
« on: January 09, 2008, 08:05:16 pm »
The lakes in Algonquin are breaking up. Travel would be most difficult right now until it gets a good freeze again and some more snow. There is maybe 6 inches of spring snow in the trees right now.

That thaw has really made a big mess. I strongly advise against going there anytime soon.

If you are really adventurous Dave you could make your own.

I did some research a few years ago and found that the babiche was going to cost as much as a pair of snowshoes. Then I read a method of making your own. It starts with a cow hide which i bet you could get one for nothing from Country Meats up the road from you. Then there are some ashes from a fire and a soaking period.

I know these are vague instructions but I have looked for the details and can't seem to find them now. I'll keep looking.

I Just got this one from S Claus, I will let you know what it is like!

Lots of snow here. LAkes are frozen but I don't suspect they are thick enough yet for travel. The snowmobile clubs are warning about thin ice on Simcoe. I bet some of the smaller lakes would be okay now as we have had a few nights of -20 now.

Sadly I'll bet the heavy snow has insulated the lake ice and the freezing may be not as advanced as i originally suspected.
