Nothing beats experience imo. Go out with some buds in March, set up the tent and practice falling through and getting out in a controlled environment. Try somewhere the water is about four feet deep first. It's not that bad. Use the picks, have someone throw you a rope, and eventually try getting out without any help. Just another experience that might help you out down the road sometime.

I keep thinking about trying ice diving - as if regular diving does not carry enough risk. needles to say I would never try that without my 7mm wetsuit on.

Can I have your tent if you don't come back?

I wear an Ice Rescue suit and still get cold in it some. Of course I'm in the water a lot longer than normal while teaching a class and being a victim at times.

For cold weather sea kayaking I have
1.-> a neoprene "Farmer John" wetsuit W/ short sleeves and legs
2.-> Next layer is 200 wt. fleece pants and 300 wt fleece jacket
3.-> top layer is a Stolquist dry suit, heavy Neoprene balaclava and gloves

Good for 1 hour of movement, 4 hours for survival.
