Winter camping requires gear. I got to wondering about why people choose a particular piece of gear, and the things that effect their decision?

Here are my criteria.

1. Works well for the intended use or purpose;

2. Durable;

3. Lightweight;

4. Affordable;

5 Environmentally sound;

6. Aesthetically pleasing (form follows function)

What governs your choices?

Pretty much the same, maybe not in that order, but same idea. I like to source stuff that are ethically made in both materials and labor. I also like things that are tough, I'm not much of a lightweight freak like I use to be just cause lightweight and tough don't really go hand  in hand. "Locally" made is preferred, I'll pay more for better made stuff that is made here then the same stuff cheeper made over seas( when I say over seas I mean China, india etc)

Do I see myself still having it in five, ten, twenty years

Will it totally satisfy my needs, or will there be some small thing about it that I wish I had waited for, or designed myseld.

Where will it fit into my kit?

I generally never buy anything spur of the moment. I wil research the item like crazy, look at it, and run it through the above criteria over a period of time generally.

And then the most important, pivotal question that we all NEED TO ASK OURSELVES:

How can I justify this (likely expensive) purchase to the wife????

Used to be the man made the gear, now it seems the gear makes the man...

Ha. ha, ha...Hutchy, you need to acquire more gear. Then when you acquire a new piece of kit, it will just blend in and be camouflaged by all the stuff you already have. Obfuscation, my friend...said another way, B.S. baffles the brain.

I couldnt help but see the irony in you advice when I read mr thoreau's quote at the bottom of your post!

And the gear is already piling up! Hence my criteria! I didnt just wake up one day and decide there needed to be gear criteria...itcame by making very poor equipment choices.  Lol. And the wife is on to my tricks As a result!  ;D

Hutchy, + 1 to you for seeing the irony in my Thoreau quote and my advice to you. AS much as I would like to simplify my life in all respects, one place where I refuse to do so is when it comes to gear. I am a gear head, I admit it. No, I am a gear addict. That more appropriately summarizes it.

Its ok. you are among friends here. Feed the addiction.

I joke about my wife, but to be fair, my lovely wife puts up with all my crazy antics and even encourages me to get quality gear. I wanted another  rifle recently, and she sat down with me and went over all the criteria and where it would fit in my current gun collection. She even agreed and I am guessing by her behavior I have a semi surprise birthday present in the works. In all honestly my wife is a big part in my gear decision making process. She understands quality over savings when you are trusting your life to gear. In winter, this is especially important. Sure, there are lots of places to save, but some things require spending a bit of cash

Cost is very important when funds are limited so I'll toss another one into the mix. Can I make better myself for less money but some sweat equity or alter/modify something cheaper to work better for little extra cash?
Trouble with DIY is that is has become an aim on its own so rather than gear in the stash it is fabrics and materials and the need for a new bigger and strong sewing machine Beware the MYOG bug

Not really a criteria.  But a case of "gear envy" sometimes motivates me to buy.  But I am still slow to make purchases for the most part until I research.
