SnowDog'en: an alternative trekking method for the aging...
« on: December 10, 2018, 07:43:53 am »
I know this isn't really trekking in the sense of total human power sled hauling, which I've done a fair share, but my aging body and more specifically its "new" onset of degenerative hip disease (also known as "wear and tear arthritis") this SnowDog has given me the ability to roam and explore further than I could otherwise. At least until the hip gets so bad I have it replaced.

Anyways... here I spend the day roaming a scenic area I have plans to winter camp at a few times this coming winter.

Nice. Have you had issues with yours pulling to one side like my buddy in Yellowknife?

You should change your name to By-Tor! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2UU62UcP_BA

Yes, it's top heavy and will tip/pull to the right more than the left but it's great on the flats.

That is an interesting alternative way to travel when pulling a toboggan becomes difficult for whatever reason. I was wondering what your experience has been in regards to handling the machine during loading and transporting. Is it pretty easy to load and unload by yourself? how do you transport it? compactness?

Loading and unloading is pretty easy as I now have a pickup and ramp. The truck bed easily handles the SnowDog, 2 sleds, gas, and my 9' toboggan. The truck cab will easily handle the rest of my gear.

Short video of loading the SnowDog (to unload just reverse the process):

Fantastic Kelly, looking good.
Looks like I’m going to have to start pulling my gear about 2 hours ahead of you on the next trip 😩

I am sure he will pull it just to have the extra hands to pull him out of slush!

I am really anticipating watching your videos this year - glad you found a way to keep getting out and living life.
